Unlucky Bay lose at Benfield

Newcastle Benfield 2Whitley Bay 1Whitley Bay opened the new decade with a defeat in this clash with Newcastle Benfield, but can count themselves unlucky to come away with nothing to show for their efforts after having the majority of the possession over the 90 minutes.

Manager Nathan Haslam made just one change for the side that lost to North Shields on Boxing Day, keeper Andy Jennison coming in for his first game in Bay colours for more than four years following his recent transfer from Hebburn Town.

Bay made a bright start, but on ten minutes veteran striker Paul Brayson lobbed Jennison from all of 40 yards to give Benfield the lead.

Undaunted Bay continued to take the game to the home side but they failed to capitalise and on 35 minutes Brayson struck again when he stabbed the ball home from close range.

Bay did eventually get on the scoresheet just before the half time whistle when Marcus Giles was first to react to a poor pass from a home defender and his shot was past the keeper before he had change to move.

Whitley had their chances in the second half, but again they failed to take them and Benfield held out for the win.

Striker Brad Hird has left Whitley Bay and will be joining Ryhope CW. Hird arrived in the summer and had a prolific scoring spell during October but has started only one of the last five games.

Manager Nathan Haslam commented “I’d like to say Brad has been a great lad to have in the dressing room. His attitude and application have been first class.”
