Whitley Bay hoping for good run and financial rewards in FA Cup

With the new season just a week old, Saturday marks the start of the 2013-14 FA Cup with 185 ties being played in the extra preliminary round of the world’s most famous cup competition.

Whitley Bay make the short journey to Coach Lane in Benton to take on Team Northumbria, with the winners collecting £1,500 and the prospect of an away tie at either Northallerton or Whitehaven in the next round.

The financial rewards are of huge significance to non-league clubs and a good run in the competition can safeguard sides at Northern League level for at least the next 12 months.

After their disappointing defeat by Dunston in the league opener, Whitley will be determined to produce an improved display against a strong Team North side, who held Ian Chandler’s team to a 2-2 draw on their only previous visit to Coach Lane in March of this year.

A draw on Saturday would result in a replay next Tuesday evening at Hillheads, but if the game is decided on the day, then Whitley Bay are due to travel to Marske United for a Northern League game next Tuesday, providing the North Yorkshire side do not draw their FA Cup tie against Consett.
