Whitley fight back in vain
Whitley Bay 4Hebburn Town 5Having looked completely outclassed for much of this game on Tuesday, Whitley staged a tremendous comeback in the final 15 minutes, scoring four times and almost snatching a point.
The stirring climax raised the spirits of the fans and demonstrated the battling qualities in the team, but it could not hide the fact that Whitley started the game too slowly and committed errors that were duly punished by a fast and quick passing Hebburn side who extended their lead at the top of the table with this victory.
Luke Sullivan gave Hebburn the lead after 12 minutes and on 19 minutes Graeme Armstrong volleyed in a superb second.
Jack Robson made it 0-3 before two goals in two minutes from Armstrong and Sullivan, who netted from the half-way line saw Hebburn 0-5 in front.
Mark Robinson pulled a goal back for Whitley and then Luke Taylor poked in a second. Robinson scored again and then in injury time Taylor netted a fourth to complete an enthralling game.
On Saturday Whitley Bay went down to a 3-1 home defeat at the hands of West Auckland Town.
The visitors went 0-2 up with two goals from David Dowson. Callum Guy then added a third just seven minutes into the second half to seal the victory.
Craig Spooner reduced the deficit, with a Robinson header striking the woodwork late on.
On Saturday Whitley are at home to Whickham while next Tuesday, Chester-le-Street are the visitors in a League Cup group stage fixture.
