Whitley lose to late penalty
Newton Aycliffe 2Whitley Bay 1A 93rd minute penalty cost Whitley Bay a point after a hard fought game at Newton Aycliffe on Saturday.
After a goalless first half, Whitley took the lead through debutant Josh MacDonald just seven minutes into the second half.
But the home side finished the stronger and two goals in the last 11 minutes, including an injury-time penalty, saw them take all three points.
Afterwards, manager Nathan Haslam admitted to being ‘massively disappointed’ at the result.
“We were really stern with them at half time; we can always have one or two having an off day but it was five or six and it was in key areas, players were hiding.“After half time we started off really brightly, we got the goal, but for whatever reason we sat back again that put us under quite a lot of pressure and a couple of mistakes has cost us in the end.“Josh (MacDonald) has done brilliantly, we knew he wasn’t going to last 90 minutes but I think every time he got the ball he went at them but we just didn’t take the chances that he gave us…but he’s done very well for the goal.“They (Newton Aycliffe) have had a good run of form, they’re a good team and they’ve pressed and pressed and that’s the sign of a team with confidence. We need that bit of experience to step up and shore things up but it’s disappointing, for whatever reason we didn’t do that. We’d have taken a draw but we shot ourselves in the foot.
“We need to work on a few things, nurse a few injuries and hopefully against Shildon we’ll be ready.”
