Whitley make a point at Consett
Consett 1Whitley Bay 1Whitley came away from Consett on Saturday with a hard earned point after withstanding sustained pressure from the hosts during the second half of an entertaining contest.
Just before the half hour and shortly after the first of two drinks breaks on a hot afternoon, Adam Shanks marked his return to the club by putting Whitley ahead with a close range finish following good work by James Martin.
Thereafter, Consett dominated possession but Whitley’s defence and in particular keeper Dan Lister, were in top form but in the 74th minute the equaliser came when Calvin Smith fired home the rebound after a shot hit the post.
Manager Nathan Haslam was delighted with his team’s resilience.
“We are delighted,” he said. “It’s a hard place to come.
“They played on the front foot, but we defended like lions so I’m really happy. We rode our luck at times, but I can’t ask for any more in terms of the way we defended.
“The nice thing is we’re solid and competing which is what you need in this league.”
With a free midweek, looked forward with optimism to this weekend’s FA Vase 1st Qualifying Round tie at home to Barnoldswick Town from Lancashire.
Whitley came out on top when the sides met in the FA Cup last season but Haslam is expecting a tough test as Whitley set out once again in search of FA Vase glory, eight years after they completed a record breaking third consecutive Vase triumph at Wembley. Kick off at Hillheads is at 3pm with admission £6 for adults and £4 for concessions.
