The appointment of Paddy Atkinson as the new Whitley Bay manager was announced to the crowd just before kick-off in Tuesday night’s local derby against Bedlington Terriers.
But David Styles remained in charge of the side for this game and signed off with an encouraging victory that saw the Hillheads outfit leapfrog Terriers and climb to tenth place in the table.
Injuries left Whitley with a threadbare squad but the youngsters drafted in did the club proud.
Josh Day, Scott Prosser and Hylton Laws all contributed to the win, with Laws rounding off the evening with the winning goal.
After a goalless first half Bedlington snatched the lead on 54 minutes when Scott Blandford, one of three former Bay players in the opposition ranks, scored from a rebound after his first effort was blocked.
But within a minute the home side won a penalty when Robbie Bird was tripped by Marc Walmsley and Peter Watling converted the spot kick.
With Whitley getting on top, Alex Kemspter’s 68th minute free kick was nodded home by former Cullercoats youngster Laws on his full debut.
Whitley had to withstand late pressure from the visitors but deservedly held out for all three points.
