Travelling to Nottingham with 16 skaters and netminders Richie Lawson and Jordan Boyle, Whitley found themselves up against the Lions’ 17-man team which included captain Luke Thomas, alternate captain Cameron Pywell and netminder Thomas Hovell.

The Warriors quickly seized control of the game by opening their account through forward Ben Richards who slotted Adam Finlinson’s deflected shot past Hovell on 1:08. Further confident passing play between defenceman Craig Johnson and Canadian Phil Edgar led to Whitley doubling their lead on 3:52 as captain Dean Holland scored a wraparound goal to add to Nottingham’s woes.

Working to build on their lead, Callum Queenan gained possession from Anthony Wetherell and played a wide pass to Watson who snapped the puck into Hovell’s net to extend his team’s lead to 3-0 on 8:20.

Further chances were missed, with a potential fourth goal disallowed, before Nottingham hit back with two quick goals for 3-2.

Jack Crowston found Richie Lawson out of his net to make it 3-1 and alternate captain Cameron Pywell took his team within a goal of Whitley 31 seconds before the first interval.

Latvian Rolands Gritāns extended Whitley’s lead to 4-2 when he tipped the puck past netminder Thomas Hovell on 29:33. Left winger Ben Campbell restored his team’s three-goal lead on 32:25 moments before forward Adam Finlinson clinked a shot against Hovell’s left post for 6-2 at the end of the second stanza.

At the midpoint of the third period, Whitley scored three goals in 28 seconds to make it 9-2; Canadian Phil Edgar, forward Ross Douglass and Richards the scorers. Prior to Campbell and Edgar each collecting their second goals of the game, Richards claimed his hat-trick on 50:40 and netted his fourth on 57:55 to give Whitley their 13-2 league win.

On Sunday (December 8), Whitley Warriors are home to Solihull Barons, face-off at 5pm.
