NEWCASTLE United hero Faustino Asprilla has given his backing to the Newcastle Vipers after they performed their own heroic comeback last weekend at their Hillheads base.
The Colombian striker, who famously scored a Champions League hat-trick against Barcelona in 1999, was at St James’ Park to see Newcastle United come from 0-4 down to draw 4-4 with Arsenal.
And when he heard of the Vipers’ exploits on Sunday to come from 1-4 behind to beat Nottingham Panthers 6-5, a meeting was arranged for the player to meet the Vipers.
Vipers’ GM Jaimie Longmuir presented Tino with his very own Vipers jersey.
Longmuir said: “I was at St James’ that night to see his hat-trick against Barcelona, and it was a great pleasure to meet him today.
“We talked about getting him down to a game, but sadly he is returning to Colombia soon and we couldn’t make it work.
“He thought Newcastle United’s comeback on Saturday was brilliant, but he was amazed at our own performance on Sunday.
“Getting someone as well known and loved as Tino Asprilla to publicise the Vipers can only help with our exposure in the region and I’d like to thank him for his time today.”
