Bad weather hits rowing

THERE was disappointment for Tynemouth Rowing Club last Sunday when the Explore Rowing Sunday League had to be cancelled due to adverse conditions.

The event was due to be held at Hexham Rowing Club, with head-to-head races starting from noon.

However, the water at Hexham was too high from heavy rain through Saturday night, making the stream too fast for inexperienced crews.

Ultimately, the decision to cancel the event was made by James Andrews, of British Rowing, and was necessary as crews would have been in danger of flowing over Hexham’s weir had the event gone ahead.

Reghiamo, the crew representing Tynemouth whose name is Latin for “we row,” run training for future regattas, while the rest of the club prepares for a possible inundation of new members following renewed interest in the sport sparked by the GB Rowing Team’s best ever medal haul at the Olympic games.

The next Sunday League will be held at Tees Rowing Club — home of gold medallist Kat Copeland — on September 2. Tynemouth and other clubs in the region are crossing their fingers for sunshine.
