HADRIAN Leisure Centre played host to the Inaugural North Tyneside Social Badminton competition on Sunday, organised by North Tyneside Badminton Partnership.
The competition saw nearly 50 adults competing in women’s doubles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles competitions.
Entries came from throughout the area from North Tyneside down to Durham.
The event was organised to provide non-club players with the opportunity for fun, social games.
Competition organiser and regional officer for Badminton England, Lynsey Edwards, said: “This was a great event. It gave social players the opportunity for fun competition without the pressures of facing club or county players.”
The men’s doubles was won by the pairing of Saiful Sazalli and Yong Onnyik after a close final in which they beat A Wazed and Reza Ahmed 21-17.
In the women’s doubles the partnership of Lavinia Gray and Pam Moat were unbeaten in a league of five pairs with Gloria Armstrong and Sheila Smith coming a close second.
In the final competition of the day, the mixed doubles saw 16 pairs entered.
Coming through the competition unbeaten to take the title were Ian Bontems and Coleen Bontems, who won the final 15-9 by beating Ryan Brignall and Gloria Armstrong – another runner-up position for Armstrong.
A fantastic day was had by all involved.
Gloria Armstrong said: “Today has been great. I never thought I would make a final, I just came to play some badminton.”
Fellow player Mark Henderson added: “I’ve really enjoyed today. I don’t mind losing when I’ve enjoyed myself.”
Volunteers from North Tyneside Badminton Partnership, members Mike and Norma Waterfield, Rene Waugh, Steve Sharp and Nicola Waterfield, ensured the event ran smoothly.
And there was help and support before and during the event from Sport North Tyneside and Hadrian Leisure Centre staff, Darren Greco, Jenni Wade and Brandy Riches.
Given the success of this event, North Tyneside Badminton Partnership are planning on running more competitions like this.
