TWO young martial artists from North Tyneside have scooped gold for sparring in a national tournament.
Christian Lloyd, eight, and Kieran Bithell, seven, sparred alongside each other at the Lincolnshire Championships 2011, which attracts competitors from across the country and is organised by the Tae Kwon-Do Association of Great Britain.
The pair are students at LWMA Tae Kwon-Do, which meets in North Shields, West Denton and Jesmond.
The club established the north east’s reputation further by winning a total of 12 medals at the tournament.
Club instructor Lydia Walker, 24, won gold medal in the ladies black belt heavyweight sparring, while sparring team member Jacob Frame, 12, won bronze in the individual boys sparring.
Christian and Kieran joined the TKD Tigers club 12 months ago and in that time have achieved yellow belts, and are both working towards their next grading in December for green stripe belt.
Kieran has also become the first student to officially graduate from the Tigers’ training programme.
Both also picked up trophies at the annual awards night for TAGB clubs in the area, with Kieran winning Student of the Year and Christian winning Best Junior Grade.
The club is always welcoming new members to take up the Korean martial art, which translated literally means “the art of the foot and fist.”
Classes are available for all ages in West Denton, Jesmond, Whitley Bay and North Shields.
