ELEVEN teams competed to be winners of the mini tennis Red and Orange team tennis event at Cullercoats Tennis Club, sponsored by Embleys Estate Agents.
In the Red event the eventual winners were The Tynemouth Pirates of Jack Boddy, Lucy Giles, Jacob Eccles and James McMeekan.
They held off strong opposition from the Cullercoats Tennis Club’s Cullercoats Cheetahs team of Oscar Danial, Alisa Rigg, Luke Fawson and Sam Knowles who came second overall, picking up the silver medals.
The rain just held off long enough for the Orange teams to take to the court.
Due to the number of teams in the nine and under event, the format for matches was all doubles games.
The standard was high in all games and the early pace was set by the team from Beverley Park, The Volcanoes, comprising Will Grey, Amy Bell, Anna Blakey and Meg Robinson.
The Tynemouth Pirates of Anna Winship, Clara Loughlin, Dan Collins and Ellis Collings were not far behind, and neither were the Reverse Wimbledon Winners team of Mia Wallace, Libby Hall, Jasmine Hacioglu and Emma Charlton.
Helen Thompson, of sponsors Embleys Estate Agents, presented the medals, which went to Mia Wallace for shot of the day, Freddy Stewart for fairest line caller/good sportsmanship award, runners-up were the Vicious Volcanoes (Will Grey, Amy Bell, Anna Blakey and Meg Robinson) and eventual winners with ten wins out of ten were Josh Harrison, Christian Sharp, Matthew Smith.
Special mention for stepping up and playing in the Orange from the Red went to James McMeekan, who was the only player to win both tournaments.
