Crusaders lose low scoring friendly

North Shields Crusaders began the new year with a friendly away at Houghton Boars.

Dave Hardy returned to Crusaders duty starting at number eight while in the backs Bruce Parker returned from injury in the centre. Tommy Rendles also returned starting on the wing.

This was a tight encounter and one which saw three players sent to the sin bin.

In the first half Houghton were reduced to 14 men but the Crusaders were unable to take advantage. When Crusaders were reduced Houghton did score to take a 5-0 lead at half-time.

In the second half it was a tight affair and neither side managed to break through to score.

Crusaders had a second player sin binned but excellent defence saw Houghton unable to add to their first half score.

Crusaders looked to have scored a try to draw level but the referee ruled it out for the kick being taken from the wrong mark. Final score 5-0 to the hosts.

Next week the Crusaders return to league action and a local derby as Percy Park Marauders visit Preston Playing Fields, kick-off 2.15pm.
