North Shields Crusaders were in action for the first time this season with Consett 3rds the visitors to Preston Playing Fields in the Coquet League.
Chris Allott led the side playing in the back row alongside last season’s player’s player Pete Dyers and Gareth Ruddle. Sean Craggs returned at prop and Jonny Armitage started at scrum-half.
The side wore their new strips for the first time, which are sponsored thanks to Paul Ryder, Dean Hoyland, Mick Newcombe, Tony Hanson, Kristen Moat and the NSRFC 100 Club.
The first half was a tight affair, Matthew Padden missed a penalty kick when the ball fell off the tee.
The first try came from Kyle Wharton on the half hour mark, Padden added the conversion. But Consett levelled the score just before half-time with a converted try.
In the second half it was again tight as Consett missed the opportunity to take the lead through a penalty kick.
Then Kyle Wharton scored a second try converted by Padden to allow the Crusaders to take the lead.
The Crusaders dominated the rest of the match as Bruce Parker scored a try and Rhys Coltherd, returning from injury after two seasons, out secured the bonus point with the fourth try, both converted by Padden to make the final score 28-7 to the hosts.
An excellent team performance and the captain gave the man of the match to the whole side.
Next week the Crusaders are again in league action and travel to the newly named South Shields Mariners, kick-off at 3pm.
