North Shields Crusaders played their first game for a month with a friendly away to South Tyneside College Mariners.
Chris Allot captained the side and Dave Alder and Pete Dyers both returned in the back row. In the backs Kris May was scrum-half, Iain Finlay came in at centre and Josh Foster was on the wing.
The first half was a tight affair with the sole score a dropped goal for the hosts as they took a 3-0 lead.
At half-time the Crusaders used their bench to make a couple of changes.
Crusaders scored a try from Iain Pearson, but Mariners always looked dangerous and took advantage of a generous penalty decision from the referee to edge back in front and lead 6-5.
The game was then won for the visitors through a late dropped goal from Jack Jeffrey.
A good work out for Crusaders who have had a period without any rugby.
The result was achieved with some good defence, in particular from May and Bruce Parker.
Next week Crusaders have a county cup semi-final as they continue the defence of the trophy at home with Gosforth Falcons the visitors, kick-off 3pm.
