Crusaders secure bonus point win over Chester-le-Street

North Shields Crusaders beat visitors Chester-le-Street 2nds in a River Coquet League fixture on Saturday.

Paul Wells started on the wing and Kris May returned at scrum-half, while in the pack Mark Watson started in the second row.

The first try came from stand-in centre Richard Sampson and the conversion was added by Matthew Padden.

There were two further first half tries for the home side from Kris May and captain Peter Finlay to give them an interval lead of 17-0.

In the second half Chester-le-Street got themselves back into the game with two unconverted tries to make it 17-12.

Crusaders re-grouped and secured the bonus point from an Owen Irving try, and the final score came from man of the match Sam Condie as it finished 27-12 to the hosts.

Next week Crusaders are at home with Novo Centurions the visitors, kick-off 3pm.

The North Shields first XV team completed an excellent victory against Bishop Auckland who are above them in the league table.

The scores were close early in the second half before North Shields ran out comfortable victors with a 44-19 scoreline in a bonus point win.

But there was disappointment for the Artisans, who saw their Northumberland Junior Challenge Trophy final postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

They were due to face Ashington 3rds at Percy Park, but heavy overnight rain saw the contest postponed and they now await a new date for the contest.
