A Whitley Bay cyclist is one of only 50 young athletes who has received a SportsAid Award of £1,000 thanks to the support of MyLotto24’s Winners of Tomorrow fund.
Sixteen-year-old Richie Allen has been awarded the grant to support his training programme.
The fund was established in 2014 to help aspiring athletes reach their potential and initially gave SportsAid Awards of £1,000 to 32 athletes.
This year the fund is expanding to give another 50 SportsAid Awards of £1,000 per athlete so the cost of their sport does not prevent them from pursuing it.
Richie said: “Receiving the award will support me a lot with transportation costs, so I will be able to attend national races and training sessions across the country and give me the opportunity to progress onto the Olympic development programme.”
Andrew Poole, from the corporate affairs team at MyLotto24, said: “The popularity of cycling has grown exponentially in recent years, spurred on not least by the countless successes of Team GB.
“We’re delighted to have Richie be part of the Winners of Tomorrow team this year and look forward to watching him continue to rise through the ranks of GB cycling both on the road and on the track.”
