Whitely Bay Barbarians under-9 and under-11 teams have secured sponsorship for the upcoming season.
Energy supplier npower has donated training kit and will provide additional support through volunteers – offering employees the chance to make a difference to their community.
The rugby club was chosen after npower was made aware of their community work and the supportive and structured environment they offer for children to play rugby in.
Gerard Hargreaves, chairman of Whitely Bay Barbarians, said: “Thanks to generous sponsorship from npower, the Barbarian under 9s and under 11s will look very smart at this year’s junior festivals.
“The striking blue hoodies have the npower logo on the back and player’s initials on the front.
“The hoodies will mean that players are easily identified at the busy north east junior festivals, which is a benefit for our coaches due to our increasing squad sizes.”
The community rugby club, which celebrates is 20th anniversary this year, works with local children at its base at Whitley Bay High School, and also coaches children at other nearby schools.
Annette Hollaway, senior manager at npower, said: “We believe youth development is important, and we hope our sponsorship will help support this wonderful club in developing local children.
“It’s really important to us, as a large employer in the north east region, to support our local communities.
“In addition to sponsoring the teams, we’re delighted to offer volunteers, so we’re looking forward to watching the teams in action.”
