At the BSUPA National SUP Surfing Championship in Cornwall, Tynemouth’s Finn Gamblin, who rides for home grown water sports brand Loco, did the region proud coming a respectable fourth in the U16 boys’ final in some large, often challenging Cornish conditions.
Brand manager Joe Thwaites said: “The standard in the boys’ category this year was off the hook with the winner busting out a 360 in the final which we didn’t even see from the men.
“Finn was really unlucky not to podium with some excellent waves to his credit.
“That said, the older boys he was up against were all pretty evenly matched, so it was great to see him give them a run for their money.
“The whole team are really proud of Finn and think he has a real chance of winning next year with a bit more practice.”
Gamblin also surfs to a high standard and has a UK Pro competition coming up in Thurso at the end of this month where he will be riding his Loco surfboard.
Thwaites hopes he will do just as well on his belly as he did standing up at the weekend.
Gamblin has been mentored by Thwaites through the brand’s Loco academy, which is always on the look out for local talent.
