Golfers are teeing up for amateur competition

SPACES are still available in the largest amateur golf tournament seen in the region.

The Golf Locker TV – based at the Saville Exchange in North Shields – have created the Great North Golf Tour.

The event, to run from March to September, will see amateur golfers battle it out for the Northern ‘Order of Merit’ over eight events at golf courses from Northumberland to Liverpool.

And already more than 100 players have signed up, with places still available for amateur players who want to test themselves against each other and the courses while experiencing a professional tour with sponsorship.

A trophy will be awarded to each event winner, while those who take part in three or more have the chance to win the overall ‘order of merit’ trophy.

Each of the events will be shown on the company’s Sky TV channel.

The tour tees off on March 26 at Linden Hall in Northumberland before moving on to Styrrup Hall in Doncaster on April 29.

It also takes in Dunstanborough Castle Golf Course, Northumberland, on July 29, as well as courses in Manchester, Keighley, Liverpool and York before finishing on October 29 at Close House in Newcastle.

Golf Locker TV managing director Jamie O’Neill said: “We wanted the tour to be based in the north of England and to take in the largest cities in the north.

“We have selected courses that will be of a true challenge to the golfers, with everything from Parklands and links to moorland.”

Tickets for each individual event, which is expected to cater for between 50 and 100 golfers, are priced at £45 plus refreshments and entry into a prize draw.

Anyone who enters all eight events will get free entry to the final at Close House.
