Monkseaton CC 1st XI picked up another 30 points to maintain their promotion push with a resounding 131-run victory away to Rock.
On a red hot day in a picturesque corner of Northumberland, Monkseaton made the most of a good batting track to post an imposing 244/7 from their 40 overs.
Opener Richard Ord (58) got the innings off to a fine start and after his departure, skipper Mark Tunstall (27), Kevin Elliott (29) and David Gowar (32) kept the scoreboard ticking along nicely for the visitors.
All-rounder Ian McDine added a final flourish, hitting a quickfire 48. Rock used eight different bowlers in an attempt to stem the runs but could not prevent Monkseaton posting their highest total of the season.
With Rock requiring more than a run a ball, it was always going to be a tough ask for their batsmen.
Once again, opening bowler Adam Doyle set the standard for the rest of the Monkseaton attack to follow. His nine overs included five maidens and only went for 14 runs. Doyle’s consistent line and length saw him beat the bat regularly and, not for the first time this season, his efforts were far more deserving of the one wicket he took.
The bulk of Rock wickets were shared by Tony Lion (4-27) and McDine (3-23) who completed a fine all-round performance as Rock were dismissed for 113 from 32.3 overs.
Maximum points for Tunstall’s men leaves them on 299 points from 13 games and occupying the second promotion spot in the Northumberland & Tyneside Cricket League Division Six (North) table, 22 points clear of Ashington Rugby.
The 1st XI have a blank weekend meaning they are next in action on Saturday, July 28, when they entertain Warkworth at Churchill Playing Fields.
For the second week running, Monkseaton 2nd XI were left to reflect on what might have been after they lost narrowly to Bomarsund at Churchill.
Batting first, the 2nds recorded their highest total of the season, posting 194/8.
Opener Bob Zanetti contributed 31 but the innings was dominated by a superb knock from wicket-keeper Dave Turnbull who hit 13 fours on his way to an unbeaten 83.
John Hewett (2-46) and Tony Errington (3-40) were again among the wickets for Monkseaton as they looked to achieve a second victory of the season but Bomarsund managed to overhaul their target with 14 balls to spare, finishing on 195/7.
The 2nds are at home again on Saturday, when they host Blyth (1pm start) and they will be looking to complete a double against the side who are currently lying at the foot of the NTCL Division Six (South) table.
Monkseaton CC hosts senior net practice every Tuesday from 6.30pm at Churchill Playing Fields.
