ON Saturday Monkseaton first team suffered a 34-run defeat at Stobswood.
Visiting skipper Owen Rankin won the toss and inserted the home side on a damp wicket.
Monkseaton had early success when Ian McDine removed the dangerous Ian Watson for three.
But Stobswood rallied with a 50 from Wingfield and a hard hitting 44 from Stefan Townsley as they eventually finished on 159 all out due to quite a few dropped catches.
Pick of the bowlers was McDine, who as usual bowled his military line and length to record figures of 4-18.
Matty Kleynhans and Chris Coulson chipped in with two apiece and there was a wicket for Rankin and a run out.
Monkseaton never got to grips with the run chase and were at one stage 34-3 after 20 overs, eventually being dismissed for 125 with only four people getting into double figures.
Monkseaton third team’s game against Blyth second team was called off due to a saturated pitch.
Meanwhile the second team played at home to Stobswood seconds.
Skipper Eric Thompson won the toss and asked the opposition to bat.
First to strike was veteran John Hewett when he had Dullaghan caught by an astounding catch from Barry Cliffe, the batsman absolutely leathered the ball and Cliffe dived full length and caught it about six inches from the ground.
Mollon (41) and Black (40) then proceeded to plunder runs before the former was caught by a fine catch from Rob Clark.
The bowlers chipped away and Stobswood finished on 154-8.
The pick of the bowlers was John Bishop, who bowled beautifully.
John Hewett took 4-50, Gary Errington 1-24, Cliffe 1-12 and Tony Errington 2-19, making him leading league wicket taker for the club at present.
Like the first team the seconds never really got to grips with the run chase and the only decent contributions came from Mark Tunstall (27), Clark (36) and a useful 22 from Richard Parkinson as Monkseaton totalled 128.
On Saturday the firsts entertain Clara Vale, the seconds are away to New Hartley seconds and hopefully the thirds will play their first of the season against Kirkley seconds.
