Monkseaton fall short of run target against Ulgham

Monkseaton suffered a home defeat to Ulgham on Saturday at Churchill Playing Fields as their batting fell short.

Returning skipper Cameron Butler lost the toss and was asked to field as Ian Mcdine and vice-captain Matty Kleyhans opened the bowling.

The first wicket fell to Mcdine thanks to an incredible running catch by Scotty Graham, who from deep extra cover dived to his right and caught the ball inches from the ground.

Chris Beever replaced Kleyhans and soon weaved his magic by taking four wickets.

Graham replaced Mcdine and bagged three before Jordan Murphy claimed an lbw and the remaining wicket was a suicidal run-out as Ulgham were all out 148.

The run chase should have been easy on an excellent wicket but the Monkseaton batsmen found more and more ways to get themselves out as nearly all the batsmen gave their wickets away.

Top scorers were Beever and Barry Cliffe with 24 each as Monkseaton were all out for 131, 17 runs short in a game they should have won.

Meanwhile Monkseaton seconds travelled to Bates Welfare.

Bates batted first and a severely depleted Monkseaton bowling attack was put to the sword with the home side amassing 275-3.

The wicket takers being John Hewitt, John Bishop and Matty Mcdine.

Monkseaton only managed 108 in reply with John Bishop top scoring with 30 and Dave Turnbull 25 not out.
