New season at tennis club

THE new tennis season has started at Cullercoats Tennis Club with an extensive adult and junior coaching programme.

The programme, run by head coach Stuart Cass, offers coaching for all ages and abilities – from complete beginners to team players.

Coaching for juniors is on Saturdays and Wednesdays. On Saturdays, mini red/tots (age four to eight) are from 9am to 10am, mini red team players/advanced are from 10am to 11am, mini orange (nine to 12-years) are from 11am to noon, greenball (ten to 12-years) are from noon to 1pm, fullball (11 to 14 years) are from 1pm to 2pm, fullball (team players/teenagers) are from 2pm to 3pm. The mini tennis session (eight to 12-years) on Wednesdays from 5pm to 6pm.

The cost of junior membership is £35, which gives youngsters access to the club’s three astroturf courts all year round, family social doubles tournaments, club tournaments and team matches plus eight weeks of free coaching. After that, each session costs £3.50 per session.

The club also offers family membership at £220 for two parents and two children.

Adult coaching takes place on Sundays. Absolute beginners are from 5pm to 6pm, improvers from 6pm to 7.30pm and team/social club players from 7.30pm to 9pm.

All adult coaching from April to September is free to members with annual membership costing £110 (if paid before 28 April). Play is possible all year round at Cullercoats due to its three flood-lit courts which were refurbished last year.

The club – based next to St George’s Church in Cullercoats – has a strong social tennis scene, with popular mix-in sessions every Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings from 6.30pm throughout the summer.
