The new bowling season started at Rockcliffe Bowling and Tennis Club with the presentation of the Daglish Cup to the successful Monday night team.

Following tradition, the club secretary’s wife Brenda Harrison opened the season, by bowling the first wood.

A delighted Daryl Illingworth, club chairman, is looking for further success this season, targeting increased membership and wider community use of Club facilities as the heart of the club’s future.

Daryl said: “Thanks to the generosity of the Readman Family Grassroots Fund at the Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland we can now provide shoes and bowls so that anyone interested can give bowling a go.

“We are holding regular taster sessions from 12.30pm to 3.30pm each Wednesday during the season, starting on May 13.”

The club has also built a new ramp, giving easier access to the playing surface, and has equipment so that those with back problems can take part.

In association with Age UK North Tyneside, opportunities will be available for older players and those who can benefit from exercise as part of their recuperation.
