North Shields Crusaders opened up the new season with a training game at Preston Playing Fields where South Tyneside College Mariners were the visitors.
In the first quarter Mariners played what resembled a first XV side and took a lead through three tries.
Crusaders lost Rhys Coltherd with a serious looking knee injury.
For the second quarter Mariners made wholesale changes and the sides were more evenly matched, and Crusaders pressed for a long time and eventually scored a try through prop Harry Watson.
The third quarter saw Mariners again strengthen their side and they scored two tries.
In the final quarter, like the second, the sides were evenly matched and Crusaders again looked the stronger side.
Watson completed his hat-trick and the final try was converted by Matty Dockey as Mariners won 27-19.
A good work out for Crusaders as they look forward to a tough season following promotion to the River Coquet League.
They kick-off their league season at home to Wallsend Warriors on Saturday, September 7, at 3pm.
