Tynemouth Rowing club were represented by ‘Tynemouth Buoys’ and the newly formed ‘Tynemouth Seals’ mixed crew, for this month’s Explore Rowing Sunday League hosted by Tees Rowing Club.
The sculling skills of crews in a coxed four were put to the test against the clock on Sunday.
Cold, damp and blustery conditions added extra obstacles for all 14 teams on a challenging, timed 1km course that tested their coxing, square blade rowing, a 360 spin on the spot, backing on to a buoy, swapping of blades, an emergency stop, blade slaps and sprints between each task.
Tom Shackleton played a very important role strategically coxing both Tynemouth teams.
Although the Buoys were unable to pick up any points, they recorded two respectable times to ensure a top half finish. They were crewed by Paul McCalvey, Chris McGuire, Michael Orr and Steve Dunn.
Tynemouth Seals scored a well earned point for their aggregate time in the open class finishing fourth overall with a fantastic round two performance being the second fastest time of the day. This was achieved in their own boat the ‘Chris Dixon’, a fitting tribute as it is named after their former chairman who sadly passed away three weeks ago. The crew were Kerry Jordan, Mark Hyson, Allison Hepburn and Kirsty McDowell.
Next month’s Explore Series Sunday League event will be hosted by Berwick Rowing Club on June 5 for the Sweep Rowing Splash and Dash sprint race event.
