PERCY Park RFC entered two sides into the inaugural Blaydon RFC 7s – at under-14 and under-15 levels.
The under-14s were quietly confident of having some success as they were fielding both strong and quick players.
The first pool game had Park pitched against Darlington MP, which turned out to be a good warm-up contest.
Park controlled the game from the start and ran in three unanswered tries to win 19-0.
In the second pool game Park came up against pre-tournament favourites Blaydon, fielding a strong and mobile team.
From the kick-off Blaydon were first to everything, seeming more alert and thirsty for victory.
Although Park competed it was a disappointing show and the players knew they had let Blaydon dictate and play without ever threatening them as Park lost 25-0.
The final pool saw Park up against Westoe.
After the thrashing from Blaydon the players set about putting things right, and they looked comfortable throughout and came away winners at 17-0 without stretching themselves.
Two wins and a loss meant Percy Park would meet Blaydon again in the final with a rather partisan crowd gathered for the home team favourites.
Park immediately silenced the crowd by scoring a well worked try in the second minute, which went unconverted.
Blaydon hit back with two unconverted tries of their own, this was down to Park being adventurous when trying to pass the ball.
Blaydon went ahead 15-10 with four minutes remaining but Park were still looking good and full of running.
Twice in the last four minutes Park broke through the line or out-flanked the defence to score two very well worked tries.
The final try was converted and Park triumphed 22-20.
This was a full squad affair with everyone playing a part which pleased the coaches no end.
The under-15s went on to take the Bowl in their age group to mark a great start for 2001-12 season.
