Alnwick 76-7 Percy Park
With justified trepidation, an ‘illness’ and injury ravaged Percy Park team limped into the home of league leaders Alnwick hoping that they could exceed expectation and return to Preston Avenue with something to aid their relegation struggle.
However, it was not to be. Alnwick needing a five point haul to bring themselves to the cusp of promotion took to the Greensfield pitch like a ‘lion rampant’ and tore their Percy cousins apart.
The score line might suggest that Percy Park were awful…they weren’t …..Alnwick were that much better. Sometimes you have to acknowledge when another team are ‘in a different class’ to yourselves and congratulate them.
Alnwick at this moment in time are one step ahead of Percy Park in all that they doing and are more than deserved North One East Champions this season. True they need a point from their last game to secure the title but on this ruthless, clinical performance it is hard to see them failing to overcome that hurdle.
Sport is cyclicial and Percy Park have enjoyed past ‘sunshine’s’ now it is about how we react and how we cope in adversity. With two games remaining they can still avoid relegation yet they need a maximum of 10 points from the remaining games.
With relegation rivals Dinnington next up at home and an away trip to another team in the relegation dogfight a positive reaction to this overwhelming defeat might take Percy through.
It didn’t take long for Alnwick to get onto the scoresheet.
In fact, they scored at regular intervals, racking up 38 points in each half to achieve their 76-point total.
Percy did get themselves on the scoresheet in the first half, Michaelk Grove going over for a converted score, which brought the score back to 26-7.
But there was no stopping the champions elect who increased their lead for half-time, and then continued to turn the scoreboard over in the second without any reply from the visitors.
