Promising start
to league season
for Tynemouth

Tynemouth got their North East Premier League season off to an encouraging start enjoying much the better of a game against Durham Academy’s young aspiring professionals at Preston Avenue.

Home skipper Ben Debnam won the toss and bravely elected to bat, but his move appeared to backfire when young opener Ben McGee was bowled by Charlie Parker for 6.

The innings quickly became 9-2 when Marcus Turner was trapped lbw by Parker for 1.

Andrew Ireland, playing against his former team-mates, aided his skipper in mounting a recovery before somewhat unluckily deflecting a leg-side ball onto his stumps, having made 15 to leave Tynemouth 37-3 off 19 overs.

The innings stumbled to 57-4 when South African professional Ruhan Pretorious was caught at slip for 11.

Debnam moved to a gritty half-century, but his innings ended in the following over when he was caught by Buckley off the bowling of Hart for 52 with the score 137-5.

Matthew Brown had progressed with grace and ease to his own 50 before being bowled by Hart for 53.

Andrew Smith (six), Phil Morse (12), Graeme Hallam (four), David Hymers ( seven no) and Finn Lonnberg (two no) saw Tynemouth through to 181-9 declared.

In reply, Durham found last year’s leading wicket-taker David Hymers in fine form.

He struck first in the fifth over, trapping Burnham lbw for four, then removed Waterson, brilliantly caught by Morse for seven and left the visitors on 55-3 by trapping Hart lbw for seven. A brilliant piece of fielding at point from Smith saw Budge run out for four.

Morse recovered well from an initial assault on his bowling and took the key wicket of opener Thompson, bowled for 45. Hymers miserly spell ended with figures of 3-22 from 20 overs.

Durham’s batsmen dug in and despite two late wickets for Smith, Hardy’s 37 not out and Main with 18 not out aided by a couple of dropped catches saw Durham hang on to avoid an outright defeat. The Academy finished 159-7 off 64 overs to give Tynemouth 13 points to the visitors’ 8 points.
