Rangers muscled out of cup at quarter-final stage

Whitley Bay Rockliff Rangers lost their cup quarter-final to a better drilled Ponteland side, but the visitors only sealed the win in the last 30 minutes after the Rangers rallied.

Ponteland opened the scoring with their first attack of the game, touching down and converting for 7-0 after only one minute.

Good play down the left wing saw Tony Birkett blaze through to score in the left corner for the Rangers, for 7-5, but Ponteland then hit a purple patch, scoring three unanswered tries and a conversion to take the score up to 24-5.

Rockcliff battled on and good pressure from the pack led to a drive over try, with Duncan Jordan getting the vital touch down for 24-10.

In the second half, Russell Hill broke away down the left wing to touch down in the corner, converted brilliantly by Chris Forster for 24-17.

Rockcliff kept the pressure on and a good break by Dan Atkinson almost led to Rockcliff’s fourth try of the game but the Ponteland defence covered well and they cleared their lines.

Ponteland then scored a pushover try which was converted to extend their lead at 31-7.

The game grew in intensity as Rangers battled back and eventually they had a man sin binned, and Ponteland took advantage to score a killer try for 36-17.
