Rockcliff only managed a losing bonus point at the weekend as they lost for the first time in the league this season at the hands of second placed Sunderland.
The home side restricted Rockcliff’s free-flowing backs with a forward dominated game, but they did not clinch the win until late in the match, scoring a converted try at the death which Rockcliff did not have time to recover from.
Sunderland opened the scoring with a converted try early in the first half, but Ricki Hasnip brought the Red and Golds back into contention when he carved through the Sunderland defence, beating the winger and full-back to touch down under the posts. Andrew Webster converted for 7-7.
Andrew Telford added Rockcliff’s second try, finishing off a good break by Kai Downey-Stevenson to score in the corner, unconverted.
Webster completed Rockcliff’s scoring when he slotted home a penalty from 30 metres out.
Rockcliff stay top of Durham and Northumberland Division 2, closely followed by Ryton and Sunderland, both of whom have games in hand.
