A brand new athletics event took place at Churchill Playing Fields in Whitley Bay, organised by NECAA (North East Counties Athletic Association).
The aim was to provide a friendly, relaxed relay event as a season opener for athletes in the local area.
The event catered for all disciplines with 4x100, 4x200, 4x400/300 and 4x800 across all age groups from U11 up to seniors.
Over 16 clubs took part, some travelling down from Scotland, including Scottish junior record holder and GB junior athlete Cameron Tindle.
The event was well managed by NECAA with the support of North Shields Poly volunteers, and was also blessed with fine, dry weather with little wind.
North Shields Poly, managed by Laura Mole and Chris Walker, were crowned club champions and were some 20 points clear at the top of the table.
Laura said: “This event was great for the club as it brought everyone together, making us a spirited community able to celebrate each other’s performances.
“As always our thanks go to the meeting organisers, timekeepers, track officials, results team and other volunteers involved in making the meeting enjoyable for all.”
The event was rated a great success by the clubs attending, with many commenting that it ‘really brought the north east and beyond athletics community together’.
It is hoped the meeting will build in future years and become an annual event on the competitive calendar.
