A young netball team have qualified for a national finals.
Seatonians Under 14 netball squad, from Whitley Bay, qualified for the National U14 Finals in May after a thrilling qualifying tournament at Gateshead Stadium last week.
The squad, based at Whitley Bay High School, finished runners-up in a ten team tournament to earn their place in next months finals.
After securing the runners-up position in their qualifying group, the young stars defeated Bishop Auckland 12-10 and then tournament favourites Grangetown, of Middlesbrough, in a thrilling semi final by the same score to set up a final against last year’s regional winners Oaksway, from Hartlepool.
A strong Oaksway squad ran out as 13-7 winners, but this did not dampen the spirits of an elated squad who qualify with Oaksway as the two north east representatives.
Head coach Liz Vuyk said: ““I can’t believe we’re going to the national finals.”
The girls will compete against 17 other teams from the nine regions for the right to be crowned National Champions in Sheffield on May 10 and 11.
