Student rugby drives forward with new steering group

THE inaugral Student Rugby League (SRL) steering group has been held at Gateshead International Stadium.

The SRL aims to provide each north east university with an opportunity to share good practice, discuss any issues and work together to improve Student Rugby League in the region.

Student Rugby League is currently thriving with Northumbria University (1sts) progressing to the second round of the Challenge Cup, Newcastle University sitting top of Premier North and North 2, Northumbria (2nds) and Teeside University both in contention to top the North 1 League.

Jade Mackie, an RFL volunteer co-ordinator said: “As this was the first SRL steering group, I was unsure as to how it would be accepted by the students.

“However, the group interacted really well and some really positive discussions were had.

“I am extremely keen to have a strong north east representative squad this year so we were able to discuss the issues surrounding last season and how we can move forward.”
