A North Tyneside teenager stumped the opposition after bowling his way into the record books with a brilliant five-over spell.

Joel Langley, 13, stunned team-mates and opposition alike with a devastating burst of seam bowling in the Hetton Lyons Sunday Cricket League.

The Backworth all-rounder – in his first full season of senior cricket – took 8-3 as Fenham Falcons were skittled out for just 81.

And Langley’s outstanding display won the Killingworth kid Cricket World’s Performance Of The Week for club cricketers.

“I couldn’t believe it when the votes started pouring in,” said the George Stephenson High School pupil.

“I was up against players from all over the country including an Aussie professional and boys much older than me.

“It was brilliant when I found out I’d finished on top.”

Langley polled almost 1,000 votes in a week, beating runner-up and hat-trick hero Ali Layard, of Somerset’s Sexey School, by 153.

“We’ve always invested a lot into developing young players at Backworth and watching Joel bowl that spell made all the hard work worthwhile,” said coach and third team captain James Morgan.

“He’s very mature for his age and has developed into an exciting batsman and bowler in a very short space of time.

“He’s already very popular with the rest of the lads and has had no problem making the transition into senior cricket. We’re very excited about what he can go on and achieve in the game.”

Langley is a member of the Newcastle MCC hub squad and made his debut for Backworth’s Saturday second team earlier this year.

“I joined the club because I had an older cousin playing there at the time and from day one the rest of the lads made me feel welcome,” he added.

“I just love everything about cricket and the fact that I can test myself against different batsmen and bowlers every week.

“The older lads trust me when I’m out in the middle and give me plenty of opportunities to learn from them.

“They were all so pleased for me when I took the eight wickets against Fenham and winning the Cricket World award was just the icing on the cake.”
