Monkseaton CC 1st XI enjoyed another maximum return at the weekend with an emphatic 10-wicket victory over Ulgham Village.

Batting first, Ulgham could only muster 57 all out at Churchill Playing Fields, with the hosts reaching their total without loss to secure a full 30 points from the contest.

Although the visitors managed to occupy the crease for 31 overs, they found runs difficult to come by with only one batsman reaching double figures.

Once again, Adam Doyle set the tone for a fine Monkseaton bowling performance, with his eight overs costing only nine runs and his performance far more deserving of the solitary wicket he took.

Vice-captain Ben Windass (4-16) and James Gowar (2-11) took the bulk of the wickets, with the latter also taking three good catches in the field as Monkseaton kept the pressure on Ulgham throughout.

The small victory target proved no problem for Monkseaton as it was reached in ten overs. Opener Richard Ord hit seven boundaries, including two huge sixes, on his way to a rapid, unbeaten 38.

The result leaves Monkseaton second in the Northumberland and Tyneside Cricket League Division Six (North) table. Mark Tunstall’s side are next in action when they travel to Rock on Saturday (1pm start).

* The Second XI slipped to a seven-wicket defeat away to Newcastle at the weekend.

Batting first, Monkseaton posted 158-6 from their 40 overs, with Richard Hughes (45), skipper Garry Benns (24) and Nick Brownlee-Sayers (26no) the main run scorers.

Inspired bowling by John Hewett (3-17) helped reduce Newcastle to 15-4 in reply - but any hopes of a Monkseaton win were dashed by Piran Reitze (77no) and Cameron Pearce (46no) who steered their team to a five-wicket triumph with nine runs to spare.

The 2nd XI host Bomarsund on Saturday at Churchill Playing Fields (1pm start).
