Tynemouth retain Harbour Cup after disasterous start

Tynemouth CC First Team hosted South Shields in the traditional pre-season curtain raiser at Preston Avenue.

They were able to welcome South African all-rounder Ruhan Pretorius who had arrived the day before.

Tynemouth won the toss and elected to bat but were regretting the decision as they slumped to 1-3 then 10-4 with the loss of Marcus Turner, Matty Brown, Pretorius and Smith.

Hallam and captain Ben Debnam set about building a partnership, before Hallam was caught for 19 and the skipper soon followed for 30 to leave Tynemouth on 60-6.

Anthony Turner and 15-year-old Ben McGee kept the score moving before the latter fell for 23.

Turner and Macchiochi saw out the last six overs to take Tynemouth to 159-8 from their 45 overs, Turner unbeaten on 55.

In reply, the hosts restricted Shields to 20 off the first ten overs before Hymers struck three times in the 11th over to leave the visitors 23-3.

No batsmen made a real impression on the scoreboard as Tynemouth took regular wickets through Smith (2), Pretorius, Hallam, Beever, Macchiochi and Oli McGee for a strong win.

The NEPL season starts on Saturday with Durham Academy visiting Preston Avenue, 11am start.
