Whitley Bay Rockcliff Vikings travelled to Berwick Bears for the Northumberland RU River Aln League game with 16 men and lost out in a close fought mudbath of a game played in good spirits.
The starting line-up consisted of Thomas Dawson, Stephen Pentland and Dan Timney in the front row. Harry Elliot and Jethro Pearson made up the second row with Richard Farnie, Alex Scott and Donald Gilchrist in the back row. Mark Savory and Christopher Forster were at nine and ten with Matthew Dunbar and Kieran Lydall as the centre partnership. The back three were made up of Angus Gilchrist, Andrew Telford and the flying winger Michael Donaldson.
Club Coach Jack Lambert warmed the bench and made an appearance at half-time for the injured Mark Savory at scrum-half.
Vikings were also helped out by two Berwick players who switched shirts for the injured Thomas Dawson and Donald Gilchrist.
The tries came from Dawson, Savory, Lambert and the four-try bonus point came from the Berwick No. 8.
Vikings could have had a fifth try if the player in question had not scored over the five-metre line, although in his defence the lines were unrecognisable by this point in the game.
Three conversions were added by Forster.
In all it was a well fought game with all players giving 100 per cent in miserable conditions for the first game of 2016.
Next week the Vikings are in league action again at home to Sunderland.
