Rockcliff Mini Rugby
WHITLEY Bay Rockcliff RFC hosted the Northumberland County Under-7s Tag Rugby Cup which saw teams from Alnwick, Blyth, Morpeth, Northern, Novocastrians, Percy Park, Ponteland, Tynedale and Rockcliff compete for four trophies – Vase, Bowl, Plate and Cup.
The introduction of the four pass rule helped to make more of a team game, and there was some excellent rugby.
After topping their group in the preliminary stages Rockcliff Raiders made it through to the semi-final of the Bowl only to lose 3-1 to Blyth Bruisers.
Blyth went on to face Percy Park Pirates in the final.
Ponteland Panthers met Novos Red Rockets in the Vase final, while Alnwick played Morpeth in the Plate final.
The Cup final was contested between Novos Black Rockets and Tynedale Tornados.
Elsewhere in the county, age group competitions were taking place and Rockcliff Under-9s won the Plate and the Under-10s lost in the final of their Plate against Tynedale.
With 135 players and links into four schools in Whitley Bay at Marden Bridge, Wellfield, Monkseaton and Valley Gardens, mini rugby is booming at Rockcliff, and the club will host the Under-8 Schools Tag Festival in April.
New players are most welcome to join the fun, and the club can be contacted on (0191) 251 3704.
