On a bitterly cold, Saturday Monkseaton Cricket Club first team travelled to the picturesque setting of Warkworth.
Monkseaton captain Cameron Butler won the toss and inserted the opposition.
On a hard wicket and a fast outfield the batsmen soon started to plunder runs.
Opening bowlers Ian Mcdine and Sam Macguire toiled to no avail. The skipper rang the changes and the first wicket arrived when Matty Kleyhans bowled a wide full toss which the batsman absolutely hammered only for Barry Cliffe to take a stunning catch in the covers.
Runs still came aplenty, then Chris Beever was brought on and bowled beautifully, taking three for 36 off his 13 overs.
By now most of the fielders had no feeling at all because of the cold.
Warkworth amassed 274-6 in 50 overs thanks to some wayward bowling and 42 extras.
The Monseaton innings started badly when Matty Kleyhans was bowled in the second over and veteran Bob Zanetti was stumped chasing a wide ball two overs later.
The innings was rescued somewhat by a splendid 106 from Chris Beever, who batted superbly whilst losing partners.
There was a good cameo from Mike Driver who scored 29 including a huge six, and a good display from Ben Windass (24 no) and an unbeaten 19 from up and coming young star Matty Simms.
Monkseaton finally reached 224-8, accumulating eight precious points.
The seconds played Corbridge seconds at Churchill playing fields, where captain Kevin Elliott won the toss and put the visitors in.
Fine bowling by openers John Hewitt and Gary Errington saw them tear into the upper order with three wickets each, while club chairman Tony Errington and Jordan Murphy joined the party with a wicket apiece, leaving Corbridge on 102-8 after their allotted 40 overs.
Monkseaton were cruising to victory at 80-2 thanks to Chris Walker clubbing the ball to all parts of the ground with a hard hitting 58, but Monkseaton had a middle order collapse and only won by two wickets.
The third team game fell victim to the weather on Sunday, as did the first practice session for the juniors, so the session will be on Sunday, May 10, at 10am at Churchill.
All are welcome and anyone requiring more information about the juniors should contact Kevin Elliott on 07598 963157.
