With the 2013-14 NIHL North due to get underway in early September, there are only around six weeks to go until the Whitley Warriors will take to the ice in competitive action.

There have been several comings and goings so far this summer, with Simon Leach returning to Hillheads as head coach while Adam Reynolds, Karl Culley, Ross Hanlon and Rob Wilson all added to the playing staff.

Whitley look to have put together a well balanced squad of players who will be aiming to challenge for every competition they enter into next season.

Warriors’ long serving forward DJ Good is looking forward to the new campaign.

He said: “I’m really excited for the season, it’s going to be very interesting because this year the league could go anywhere between the top four teams.

“I’m really happy to have Simon back as coach because the team will have a clear aim and direction.

“He keeps players on their toes and that will make many raise their game.”

And DJ has welcomed the new faces arriving at Hillheads during the close season.

He added: “The new signings will transform the team.

“Culley and Reynolds will likely be in the top scorers for the league this season.

“Hanlon is just what we need to help the defence out as we lacked depth there last year, I’m also really happy to have Rob (Wilson) back as he’s a typical Whitley player and a local lad.”

Good said the club has ambitions for the new season with the restructuring of the NIHL North set up.

“Next season we are out to win the league and hopefully dominate like we have in the past, but it will be a tough season with the standard being so high now, which will make for some very interesting games which in turn will hopefully bring in more fans.

“It’s disappointing to lose the promotion/relegation (aspect of NIHL North) as that seemed to raise the standard of the league.

“However, in the short term it’s virtually the same as the same teams are in the division so technically it won’t make any difference this season.”

Whitley Warriors are inviting fans to their first social event of the new season.

A pub quiz will be staged at the Ice Rink bar on Sunday, July 21.

The quiz will get under way at 5.30pm and more details can be found on the Warriors’ fans forum http://boards.whitleywarriors.net/
