Will continues to shine at national level in tennis

Beverley Park Tennis Club player Will Gray has had a remarkable year.

The 12-year-old from Whitley Bay, who attends St Thomas More RC Academy, has been playing regularly since the age of four.

He received one-to-one coaching from the then club coach Steve Lord from the age of five.

He has trained at the Northumberland Tennis Academy in Jesmond since the age of seven, and is currently coached by Chris Sanderson, the academy manager and senior performance coach.

Gray now regularly competes regionally, nationally and internationally.

He has represented Northumberland in inter-county matches since the age of eight and is currently Northumberland 12Us and 14Us number one.

He represented Great Britain 11Us in Paris last year and also Great Britain 12Us in Antwerp, Belgium, in the International Team Cup earlier this year – the event included national teams from Holland, Belgium (French) and Belgium (Flemish) – where he won all of his matches and the GB team won the cup.

Gray was part of the Northumberland Tennis Academy 12Us team which won the Aegon National Team Tennis Finals, beating the favourites Sutton (Surrey) Tennis Academy in the final were he won all of his singles matches throughout the entire competition, both during the regional phase and finals weekend.

He has been part of the LTA’s Aegon Futurestars Programme for the past three years, and as part of that he regularly attends LTA regional training camps in Manchester and LTA national training camps at the National Tennis Centre in London.
