BEVERLEY Park Tennis Club in Monkseaton’s annual championships saw a good number of entries and some excellent matches.
Phil Wood is the new men’s champion after he beat James Young 6-0, 6-4 in the final.
In the ladies’ competition, Jane Pledger was victorious with a 6-1 6-1 win over Terri Pridie, regaining the title she has held several times before.
This year, for the first time, there were also new competitions for the club’s younger members, with mini-tennis championships for the red, orange and green groups, aged under-eight, under-nine and under-11 respectively.
The trophy donated by the club’s president, The Cartledge Cup for Endeavour, was awarded to Tom Rickards, and the under-ten scholarships went to promising young players Will Gray and Amy Bell.
Club chairman Jon Pope said: “I would like to congratulate all the winners, and thank all those who took part so enthusiastically.
“Thanks also go to Julia Carmichael for organising this year’s tournament.”
The finals were watched by a good crowd of spectators, and there was a well attended barbecue in the evening.
Bookings are now being taken for the late summer children’s three-day mini-camp from August 30 to September 1.
