YOUNG rugby league players have been showcasing their schools in an annual competition for schools.
Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Primary School won the Whitley Bay Barbarians Challenge Cup for the second successive year.
They defeated New York Primary in a thrilling finale to the Barbarians’ Primary Schools Year 5/6 Festival.
To get to the final they had to overcome a spirited Holystone outfit.
The final itself was a credit to both schools and to the game of rugby league.
It had everything a game should have – skilful handling, clever, determined running and robust, uncompromising defence.
In fact it was their defence which won the game for Star of the Sea, restricting the New Yorkers to just one converted try while Star themselves narrowly won by just the single try.
With such a narrow margin the result was in doubt right up to the final whistle, and the big crowd gave both teams a tremendous ovation at the final whistle.
Festival organiser Ken Sykes said: “It was wonderful to see 150 children playing rugby league in the right spirit, and having a great time.”
