TWO North Tynesiders have been recognised as local heroes for helping young people get into sport across the borough.
Alex Liddell, 21, and Conner Williams, 16, both volunteers for the Co-operative StreetGames programme, picked up prizes at this year’s North Tyneside Sports Awards.
One of Alex’s greatest achievements was securing a grant of £850 to run family fun days to encourage young people who wouldn’t usually get involved in sport to give it a go.
Conner has committed over 300 hours to volunteering over the last year, gaining qualifications such as a sports leader’s award and a boxing tutor’s certificate.
Both are members of the StreetGames programme, set up to train volunteers aged between 16 and 25 in community leadership and sports coaching skills.
John Downes, national volunteering fieldwork manager for StreetGames, said: “Alex and Conner have been recognised as local heroes because of their fantastic work in the programme and how they have helped so many young people in their community to access sport.
“Without the efforts of volunteers like Alex and Conner, young people wouldn’t be able to access the sport they love at a price, time and place available to them.”
