A talk is taking place on one of North Shields’ famous artists.

The Old Low Light Heritage Centre, on North Shields Fish Quay, is hosting the event on Saturday, September 5, at 11am.

Dave Young will be talking about the life and work of North Shields-born artist Victor Noble Rainbird (1887 to 1936).

The Centre is currently hosting a major exhibition of paintings by Rainbird which runs until Sunday, September 13.

It is the largest exhibition of paintings by the artist to have been staged since the 1930s, and brings together many paintings in his home town that have never previously been seen in public.

The exhibition has been curated by Dave, chair of the Friends of Victor Noble Rainbird, in association with Tynemouth Fine Art, and brings together pictures from their own collection of Rainbird’s work, along with paintings on loan from other private and public collections.

To book a place for the talk by Dave Young or for more information about the Victor Noble Rainbird exhibition, please contact The Old Low Light Heritage Centre on (0191) 257 4506 or email

Talk tickets cost £2 including admission to the Heritage Centre and exhibitions.

In 1914, aged 26, Victor Noble Rainbird joined the Northumberland Fusiliers as a private soldier, serving on the western front at Ypres, Passchendale, Vimy Ridge and Armentieres.

Later on he went to the Northumberland Fusiliers, 34th Division, and in connection with field observation prepared drawings for headquarters in the front line on the Somme Front.

He ended his war as a corporal with the Durham Light Infantry.

Once demobbed he returned to North Shields to set up as a professional artist and exhibited works at the Artists of the Northern Counties exhibitions at the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle upon Tyne, at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and also at the Royal Academy.

Rainbird was a landscape, street scene, coastal and figure painter in oil and watercolour, but also a muralist, illustrator and stained glass window designer.
