Music acts to come together for event

Local musicians will be hitting all the right notes at a special free community event.

Rockcliffe Community Association has organised a free ‘Our Big Gig’ event to be held in Grafton Road as part of a series of community events taking place around the country from July 11 to 13.

Among the acts lined up on Saturday, July 12, are Big Noise Samba Drummers, local Latin trio Salida, ukelele band Bay Uke, James Woods, Rockcliffe First School Glee Club and folk singer Ross Embleton.

Event organiser Sarah Sutton said: “We are holding our World Cup inspired event on the same day as Rockcliffe First School’s Heritage Event and Summer Fair so it really will be a fun day with something to suit everyone.

“Whitley Bay’s Big Local has funded the creation of the Big Noise Community Samba Band and Bay Uke.

“A drumming workshop will take place during the afternoon to allow anyone who fancies a try to ‘have a bash’ and we’ll be making percussion instruments so everyone can join in the music making.

“If sport is more up your street, a football cage will be on site for a World Cup inspired kickaround.”

The community festivals have been backed by Minister for Communities Stephen Williams, who said: “Live music is a great way of getting people from all different backgrounds and from right across the country involved in their local community.”
