A 25-strong brass band will entertain visitors to a North Shields park this weekend.

Dunston Silver Band will perform in Northumberland Park’s new Victorian-style bandstand from 1pm on Sunday, April 26.

We’re really looking forward to the Sunday Sessions starting and we’re delighted Dunston Silver Band will be the first band to perform

The performance is part of the North Tyneside Council’s new ‘Sunday Sessions’ for the park, which will see different musicians perform in the picturesque location on the last Sunday of each month.

Samantha Dand, senior manager for local environmental services, said: “The new bandstand has been installed as part of the multimillion pound revamp and restoration project for the entire park, and it’s such a charming and beautiful feature.

“We’re really looking forward to the Sunday Sessions starting and we’re delighted Dunston Silver Band will be the first band to perform. If any other bands wish to perform, I’d encourage them to get in touch.

“The park is very much open and we have welcomed many happy visitors over the half term holiday. A lot of the work in the park is now complete and we’re receiving great feedback.”

Natasha Newson, band trustee and committee member, added: “Dunston Silver Band is honoured to be part of the re-opening of Northumberland Park. A lot of our players live locally across North Tyneside and we are excited to be part of this historic local community event.”

Work in the park, which lies between North Shields and Tynemouth, has also included an archaeological dig, which found an outline of a medieval hospital; restoring or replicating lost Victorian features; improvements to the bowling green and general planting and landscaping.

A tearoom and education centre has also been built, due to open in the summer, as well as improvements to the children’s playpark and the creation of a BMX Pump Track, also set to open during the summer.

All the improvements will be celebrated at a family event on August 8, to coincide with the 130 year anniversary of the original opening of Northumberland Park.
