Century celebrations for Seahouses' Betty

A former Seahouses resident, who still lives in the North East, celebrated her 100th birthday earlier this month.

Elizabeth Weightman (née Graham) reached the milestone on Thursday, August 11, having been born at the height of the First World War, a century before.

Betty, as she was known, was born in Seahouses on August 11, 1916.

Her parents ran a grocery store on Main Street and she was brought up in the house adjoining the shop, along with two brothers and five sisters.

One brother, Will, owned the Castle Inn in Bamburgh, and a sister, Ella, owned the Bamburgh Castle Hotel in Seahouses.

One of her fondest memories was her father cooking a pail of chips on Friday nights.

Betty married in 1942, moved to Newcastle, and has two children, Barbara, who lives in London, and Peter, who lives in Newcastle.

Peter is involved in the North East Maritime Trust and Tanfield Railway.

Betty’s husband Stanley died 25 years ago, but she still lives in Newcastle and enjoys visiting Seahouses for a drink in The Olde Ship Inn and, of course, fish and chips.

Betty celebrated her 100th birthday with a tea party at her home in Newcastle and she is also pictured with her cake.
